The reach of Chonqing-based DJ CELL is one that goes beyond music, encompassing also style and fashion, initially thanks to his streetwear label WHOOSIS, founded in 2015, but as of late, also through spin-off brand theboyhasnopatience. The latter has been shifting gear, and following an ephemeral space in Shanghai, the undisputed lifestyle hub of Chinese youth, it has now inaugurated a standalone store in the city’s Jing’an district. The theboyhasnopatience store occupies a 100 sqm. (1,076 sq.ft.) unit on the premises of a modern structure, and features an interior design by FON STUDIO, the same practice which designed the preceding pop-up store. Intricately constructed, the retail space features a semi-blind façade that’s forensically cut open in the middle and flanked on either side by glass doors, creating bold discretion and evoking curiosity at the same time.
Both entrances are followed by corridors which lead to theboyhasnopatience‘s inner sanctum where coveted merchandise is on display. Given an unusual configuration, immersive setting and use of understated materials, the carefully created ‘mystical’ aura of the façade effortlessly extends inside. A large square ottoman is flanked on either side by apparel display areas, while a geometrically sculpted timber counter demarcates the store’s back section. Here, a sizeable circular volume houses a fitting room while a semi-circular back wall offers additional apparel display space and conceals storage space at the same time. The aforementioned material palette includes micro cement, black metal, silver metal and timber creates an austere, timeless setting, and one which seamlessly aligns with theboyhasnopatience‘s core essence.
