New Museum Announces 36 Artists and Collectives for Upcoming Triennial, Including Virginia Chihota, Mandy El-Sayegh, Josi, Jota Mombaça, and Agnes Questionmark

The New Museum in New York has announced the 36 artists and collectives that will participate in the 2027 New Museum Triennial, running February 4–May 16, 2027.

Under the title “The Outside Expands,” the sixth edition of the Triennial will also be the first to take place at the museum since its expansion opened earlier this year. Among the closely watched artists included are Virginia Chihota, Mandy El-Sayegh, Jesús Hilario-Reyes, Josi, Jota Mombaça, Agnes Questionmark, and Sin Wai Kin.

This Triennial will be curated by New Museum curator Vivian Crockett and Isabella Rjeille, a curator at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), with curatorial assistant Thalia Stefaniuk and curatorial fellow Taeyi Kim. In a release, the museum billed it as “the first iteration of the Triennial to be curated by an international team.”

Like the curatorial team, the artist list is also extremely international with the 36 artists and collectives hailing from 34 countries, or “the widest international representation in a New Museum Triennial to date,” per a release. The geographic spread ranges from Australia to South Africa, India to Mexico, South Korea to Spain, Brazil to Greece, and beyond. Only four artists are listed as having a residence in the US, while Berlin and London are tied with being the most represented city with three artists apiece.

The exhibition’s title takes partial inspiration from a 1979 artist intervention by the collective 3NÓS3 (3US3), which occurred under Brazil’s brutal dictatorship and “invited artists and cultural workers to think beyond institutions during a period of extreme repression,” according to a release, which adds, “The Outside Expands turns towards artists that destabilize fixed notions of territory, identity, gender, and sexuality and who foster alternate ways of forging relationships, kinships, and collaborations.”
