Element store by atelier tao+c

Multi-brand store Element first opened its doors on Shanghai‘s bustling Yuyuan Lu in 2019. Following a revamp two years ago, the retail space has seen another renewal, supervised by local architecture practice atelier tao+c. Occupying 225 sqm. (2,422 sq.ft.) spread across three floors of a modest 1980s structure, the new interior design is not only inspired by the building’s generic architectural elements, but also a restrained budget. Consequently, previous modifications, such as steel beams, emergency exit doors, air conditioning units, and fire hydrants are highlighted through chromatic coding. Additionally, previously sealed windows have been reopened and clad with operable metal shutters, reasserting the building’s character while revealing its traces of time. That said, the façade has been given a striking makeover as well which makes it stand out—a steel exoskeleton has been added, reaching from the ground floor up to the third floor, embedding doors, windows, and signage mounts.

Mind you, the added structure also supports awnings and a café counter on the ground floor, while functioning as a scaffold for seasonal banners. Inside, the original rusty steel staircase has been retained and dipped in a deep green hue and paired with new railings. As said, the original architectural elements of the building have been marked and accentuated. The building’s shell is overlaid by a layering of timber fixtures, comprising floor-to-ceiling beams, panels, suspended display units, but also metal shelving and clothing racks, while also leaving intentional gaps which expose wall section and utility pipes. Also, the timber constellation houses fitting and storage rooms and display nooks. Additional furnishings include matching timber display tables and metal equivalents, in addition to moveable metal clothing racks. The design principle is only modestly repeated on the upper floors, which see a different, less ‘congested’ configurations. The renewed Element store carries a curated range of leading contemporary brands from home and abroad. © superfuture
